IOGear 4-Port DVI KVMP Switch with Audio and Cables GCS1764
From IOGEAR

The IOGEAR DVI KVMP Switch GCS1764 charts a revolutionary new direction in KVM switch functionality by providing an interface for todays digital monitors while integrating a 4-port USB KVM switch with USB peripheral sharing capabilities. As a KVM switch, the unit allows the user to access four computers from a single USB keyboard, USB mouse, and monitor, and also share among the computers peripherals such as external hard drives, printers and scanners. The GCS1764s independent (asynchronous) switching feature allows the KVM focus to be on one computer while the USB peripheral focus is on another. The user can switch from one computer to another without interrupting print jobs, downloads or other functions being handled by connected peripherlas. This eliminates the need to purchase a separate USB hub as well as the need to purchase separate stand-alone peripheral sharers - such as printer servers, modem splitters, etc. The GCS1764 further improves on previous designs with DVI (Digital Video Interface) connectors, and the transfer of keyboard and mouse data to the computers via a fast, reliable USB connection. DVI supports both digital input (flat panel displays, data projectors, plasma displays, digital TVs and set-top boxes) and analog video input (traditional monitors and TVs).

Excellent product, but you may run into this easily-solved problem...5
I have a Dell Dimension 4550, a QuickSilver 2002 PowerMac G4 and a PowerMac G5 Quad I needed to share a 23" 1920x1200 LCD DVI display. After reading the reviews here, I gave it a go, and I like the product a lot. I like that it comes with all the cables you need, whereas some of the more expensive units don't. I had to dig to find that out, and that it adds about $100 to their cost to buy four cable sets separately.

There was one major problem: when the Dell Dimension 4550 was turned on, the keyboard would lag badly or sometimes spit out 20 copies of the last character, regardless of which computer I was using. And when using the Dell, the optical wheel mouse would go dead every minute or two, requiring an unplug & replug (or switching to a Mac, then back to the Dell).

IOGear tech support was very helpful, and it turns out there's an issue with motherboards using nForce4 chipsets and their USB implementation. After a few back-and-forth emails with quick turnaround, IOGear support pointed me to a discussion in an nVidia forum. A lot of people were having the exact same symptoms as I. One quick answer is to buy an inexpensive Micro Innovations USB210P hub and put it between the Dell and the KVM. Amazon sells the hub as of this writing. I originally had links to the support forum and to the hub on Amazon, but review guidelines do not allow URLs. Sorry!

Everyone in the forum who has tried this hub reports success, and it doesn't even need to be powered. Mine will be here in two days. In the meantime I tried two other hubs and a USB card, and they didn't help, which also mirrored other people's experiences. Only a few products are known to fix the problem, and the Micro Innovations USB210P was the easiest to find. The iRocks IR-4300 hub also works.

Finally a product that works as advertised (and better)5
I honestly think that this would have to be one of the easiest setups I have ever been through for a KVM switch.

And what a pleasant surprise to find that its able to deal with above spec resolutions with no video artifacts.

My setup includes:

Port1: DELL 4600C w/ GeForce4 @ 1600 x 1200
Port2: Mac mini w/ ATI controller @ 1920 x 1200
Port3: Mac Powerbook G4 w/ Radeon 9700 @ 1920 x 1200
Port4: Not used *yet*

Display: Apple Cinema Display 23" native resolution 1920 x 1200

Given the KVM is only rated for 1600 x 1200 dpi, the fact that the Macs can drive the display at higher resolution is simply a bonus. And I'd have to add that the higher resolution comes at no cost to quality or clarity.

If only every product could be unpackaged, plugged in, and simply work.

Sharing a Windows keyboard with the Macs also works rather well ... but that has more to do with OS X than the IOGEAR KVM.

Save yourself the trouble2
My Setup:
4 x Dell 4700's/Radeon x300
2 x Dell 5150's/Radeon x300

2 of 4 Dell 4700's would work fine, the monitor would never come back after switching. So I bought 2 new Dell 5150's thinking they would work. Plugged them in and after switching back and forth the Dell 19" Ultrasharp 1905 would not restore. I tried a different monitor with the same results.

Contacted their support 3 times and they were miffed and had no answers.

Needless to say I bought an AVOCENT SWITCHVIEW 4-PORT DVI USB KVM SWITCH USB 2.0 HUB W/AUDIO

Worked flawless.

Kvm @ a good price5
The switch worked right out of the box. The only set-up time was

connecting cables and fiiting the switch into a homemade bracket on the

side of my desk. This is a very basic device, you'll need cables if you

don't have them already. It lacks a daisy-chain option,

but at this price point it's an excellent value. Best suited for a one

person environment.

Incompatible with mini keyboards1
None of my rack mount keyboards are compatible with this product. You are forced to use a standard keyboard. Why? Who knows? Steer clear!

Excellent device5
It was ok, but the product was labeled as rackmount and it didn't include the rackmount pieces.

Almost junk2
I give it 2 stars because, when it works it works great. I have had 2 and both have the same problems. On the first one, the keyboard on one side died and would restart after totally disconnecting the cables. Within a few days, it would do it again. The second one does the same but waits weeks before dropping the keyboard. I tried returning them but got nowhere.

I do not recommend this product.

Update Oct 8, 2006: The sound is now having major problems. One channel is dead on one cable and real weak on the other.

I *really* don't recommend this product.

Good but losses keyboard connection occasionally4
I have had this unit for about 1 year now using it between my iMac G4 and a Dell Optiplex. Everything works fine except about once a week the keyboard and or mouse will stop responding. I have tried multiple mice, keyboards, and I have had a new PC and it still acts up. The IOgear website says that it is because it is not getting enough power from the USB connection. I just learn to live with it but I am a tolerant person. I have their PS2 version and have never had an issue with it.

Great for use with Apple Powerbook5
I recently bought a 12" Powerbook G4. The small size is great for portability, but sometimes the ergonomics of it (the small screen, especially) are a little tiring. That's where this KVM switch works so well.

I bought it intending to use it only to toggle my monitor (an older 15" Envision CRT) between my Windows desktop and the Powerbook, so that I could occasionally bring the Powerbook into the office and easily plug in to the bigger display.

This use alone is worth the price of admission - suddenly the desktop becomes huge, since the Powerbook allows you to use one display as an extension of the other. Playing with the resolution settings allows you to magnify a little bit on the bigger display, too - makes text easier to read.

Then I hooked up the USB cable to the Powerbook, too, and was suddenly and unexpectedly pleased by the comfort of using my old mouse and bigger keyboard (with numeric keypad and all of the other miscellaneous extra keys).

I'm very satisfied - just by plugging or unplugging three bundled cables, I can either curl up on the couch with a tiny laptop, or quickly set it up in a more ergonomically proper manner.

Setup was extremely simple - had one false start with the switch right out of the box, but then I actually read the instructions (four very short steps) and was off and running.

In short: if you've got a laptop that supports the use of two screens, this product will turn it into a great desktop computer in a matter of seconds.

No hot-key switching3
I recently purchased this switch to expand my farm of computers beyond the two-port PS-2 KVM I already have. The price of the Kinamax KVM-USB4 and the USB keyboard/mouse support were the primary motivations for my purchase decision. The unit arrived as advertised, with all necessary cables to connect to four computers.

The thing that surprised me about this switch is that it lacks any keyboard hot-key switching capability. I have never before encountered a switch that did not allow you to change computers with the scroll-lock key (or some other combination), so I didn't think to look harder at the specifications before I ordered. The included manual clearly stated that the button on the unit is the only way to switch between the inputs, and I was unable to find any undocumented hot-key sequence when I used the switch.

The bottom line is that the switch works, but does not include a "key" feature that I need (sorry for the pun!), so I will be returning the switch in favor of a more expensive model.

Very good for the price.4
It work well for the most part. So far the only problems I have had is:

1. If you let the computer go to sleep. It will not see the keyboard and mouse until you unplug the cable to the PC, and plug it back in.

2. I plugged a USB Belkin Wireless network adapter into the KVM. It would recognize the adapter but would not install correctly. The problem could stem from the Belkin going through through a Hub.

With the two problems I would still recommend this product. The problems are not much of a bother to me. I would say that problem one could be fixed if you set you computer to power the usb even in sleep mode. But for me it really isn't worth the effort.

Bad video, USB ports hang2
I've had this for over 9 months now and in general it works OK but I've seen a lot fo problems other people have seen plus every once in a while when I'm switching between my Windows server and laptop the USB port will just hang. In some cass I've had to reboot a server to get the port back, other cases I can go into sleep mode and come back and teh port will be OK. In addition, the debounce function for the button that does the switching doesn't work all the time either. Sometimes you'll press the button once and you'll end up two or three ports away instead of one. The video also is bad especialy with teh laptop. You'll see lines scanning across the screen. Anotehr problem is cable management, I would prefer to have all the cables come out the back instead of from the sides. This makes it awkward if you have to move any hardware and it just look sloppy. As someone else emntioned, having hot key switch capability would be nice, too. In general the device works if you don't switch too often every day.

Low Cost, Non Signal Degrading VGA SWITCH5
For those with 2 HiDef displays or projectors and you want to use the VGA inputs, this is a godsend! I have a CRT front projector (100" screen) and a small 15" LCD panel that both accept VGA signals, I wanted to simply be able to watch all my sources on either of the displays....whether the source was upconverted by a DVDO HD Iscan video processor (DVD, VCR, original Xbox, SEGA Dreamcasr, etc.,), or native HiDef signals (Xbox 360, HDTV Tuner, HD DVD, etc.,) And this switch is fantastic, especially for the price. Highly recommend it to those considering spendng LOTS more money for similar devices..because they don't want the signal degraded.

Lets me switch between my reg monitor and 46" HDTV monitor 5
I have a Dell E1705 laptop hooked up to an external monitor in addition to the laptop screen, so that the ms desktop spans across both screens. I recently purchased a Samsung LN46A550 TV: Samsung LN46A550 46-inch 1080p LCD HDTV and use this simple AB box to switch between my desktop monitor and the TV. I haven't noticed any degradation of the picture quality with this switch in the middle, and I simply flip to A when I want to use my smaller desktop monitor and B when I want to use the 46" TV monitor.

You'll also need 2 M/M monitor cables if you are trying something similar: Tripp Lite P502-006 SVGA Monitor Gold Cable w RGB Coax HD15M/M - 6ft. You may need something longer for one of the cables, depending how far away the TV is from your computer. Whatever you get just make sure they are male on both ends, as all the monitor inputs on the TV/switch/computer are Female.

You'll probably also want a stereo cable to connect the pc sound to the TV: Cables To Go - 27412 - 12ft 3.5mm Stereo Audio Cable M/M PC-99 (Beige)

And a reliable remote keyboard/mouse so you can operate the computer from the couch when you've switched to the TV monitor: Adesso 2.4 GHZ WIRELESS SLIMTOUCH TOUCHPAD MINI KEYBOARD SILVER W/BLACK KEYS ( WKB-4000US )

The mousepad on the above keyboard works well, but there's a few games that I prefer to use a normal mouse with. I just ordered a Logitech bluetooth mouse for that purpose, but haven't tested it out yet: Logitech V470 Bluetooth Cordless Laser Mouse for Notebooks - Blue

This setup works for me for switching between my TV and another monitor on the same computer.

A more traditional use for this AB switch would be sharing one monitor with two computers, and I noticed a couple reviews mention that application as well. I didn't see anything specific on using it to switch to/from a HDTV and an external monitor on the same computer, and that's one reason I wrote this review.

The Switch itself is a very simple device and it's hard to imagine much going wrong with it. One minor issue I had was with the screws inside the box unraveling instead of the monitor connection screws. I wound up having to get a phillips screwdriver out to open the box and reseat the screws that had fallen off inside.

Edit 5/27/2008: After writing all this about using two monitors via one connection on the PC...my son pointed out that a vga splitter would be simpler and allow the tv and pc monitor to display the same image simultaneously. Cables To Go - 29550 - 2-Port UXGA Video Splitter Extender seems like it should do the trick, eliminating the AB switch from the equation. The cable that connects this particular splitter to the PC looks like it needs to be a non-standard M/F though (looking at the picture).

Good View4
When you run a server and a laptop next to each other, or you just want more real estate space for your single monitor, using this switch box makes switching back and for and sharing another monitor easy.

crap product...crap support1
I bought this KVM because I was under the impression you could connect any combination of PC/Mac (with USB keyboard and mouse, of course) and I hooked up my G3 and G4. At first, I tried with the mouse still running into the USB port on the keyboard as usual. This did not work. I shut down both computers, ran the mouse into the KVM, re-booted, and this still didn't work. I then noticed the keyboard was not working on either computer. I e-mailed D-Link and the response I got was, "It appears your keyboard and mouse are not compatible." It appears? It appears I'm going to tell everyone what a piece of crap this product and your service are.

Granted, I was planning on buying a different mouse and I may still try to use this KVM, but I've got a feeling I'll end up buying the Connectpro KVM that everyone is going on about.

This switch would not work and Dlink has no support for it...1
tried with 3 different keyboards but it would not work. I wasted all day just trying to get it to work. And I am not illiterate, I am an engineer. Called DLINK 6 times and wasted another 3 hours they could not and would not help me. Low priority item? Probably. No solutions? Likely. Try to buy Belkin or something else, save lots of hassle.

KVM2
This USB KVM did not let my keyboard hotkeys (shortcuts) work through it.
D-link support said it will not.

IOGEAR 2-Port DVI KVMP Switch with Audio and Cables (GCS1762)
From IOGEAR

The IOGEAR DVI KVMP Switch GCS1762 switch charts a revolutionary new direction in KVM switch functionality by combining a 2-port USB KVM switch with USB peripheral sharing capability at the same time as it provides an interface for a digital monitor (DVI). As a KVM switch, it allows users to access two computers from a single USB keyboard, USB mouse, and monitor, and any peripherals such as printers and scanners. The GCS1762s independent (asynchronous) switching feature, allows the KVM focus to be on one computer while the USB peripheral focus is on another. This eliminates the need to purchase a separate USB hub as well as the need to purchase separate stand-alone peripheral sharers - such as printer servers, modem splitters, etc. The GCS1762 further improves on previous designs with DVI (Digital Video Interface) connectors, and the transfer of keyboard and mouse data to the computers via a fast, reliable USB connection. DVI supports both digital input (flat panel displays, data projectors, plasma displays, digital TVs and set-top boxes) and analog video input (traditional monitors and TVs).

A few fatal flaws2
This product would have been the answer to all of my problems if it weren't for a few fatal flaws;

1) It does not support 'multifunction' keyboards...their technical support informed me this includes any keyboards that include volume control, internet buttons, etc. You know, the kind that come with most modern PCs sold today. I don't use those buttons and keyboards are cheap - I'd be willing to just buy a new one except:

2) Mice with wheel buttons are not supported (according to their tech support, this also constitutes a 'multifunction' device)...so if you are a gamer (or just like the wheel button), prepare to replace your gaming mouse with a plain vanilla 2-button mouse.

3) Their tech support is pretty awful; They seem to have a checklist of devices that are unsupported (despite being pretty standard with most PCs on the market today), and seem more interested in finding a reason why your configuration is unsupported (thus ending the call) than actually working with you. My mouse was working on both PCs but was just a little choppy on one, but once the support person latched onto the fact that it had a wheel, they were unwilling to waste another second talking about what might be causing the problem and if anything at all could be done to fix it.

It's too bad, it's even a slick looking little device. I give it two stars because it does indeed switch back and forth between the two monitors.

It works ok if you work at it...3
I'm switching a pc and a mac on an apple cinema 23" display at 1920x1200. The switching works fine with the mac but sometimes the display won't immediately show the pc. Not the fault of the kvm, apparently -- switching the DVI cable has the same effect. BUT you can solve that problem by putting the pc display to sleep quickly. When it wakes up with the focus already on the display, it works fine.

The keyboard is another story. First, there are two usb ports on the front, one for the keyboard and one for the mouse. Using my mac keyboard with the mouse plugged into it (it has a small hub in the kbd), the mouse will not work when the two are just plugged into the kbd usb port on the KVM. So, I plugged them both into the mouse port on the KVM. This works perfectly -- except -- the keyboard hotkeys do not work. In order for the mouse to work, it MUST be attached to the mouse port. For the keyboard hotkeys to work, the kbd MUST be attached to the keyboard port. But this leads to other problems. Apparently the firmware is a little buggy because the keyboard gets to acting oddly from time to time, slow typing, stuck keys, etc. This is because the keyboard port interprets the data for the keyboard, looking for hotkeys and/or mapping mac keys to pc keys. I turned off the mapping, and so far so good except for an occasional hiccup which can be fixed by using the 'reset usb' hotkeys. Of course, plugging both kbd and mouse into the 'mouse' usb port works perfectly, and you can switch the focus using the front panel switches.

Nice package, horrible product1
I got this KVM switch yesterday and hooked it up to my laptop and my old desktop. The laptop would display properly on the monitor, but the desktop wouldn't. Plugging the desktop in directly confirms that my DVI port works. Also the switch would tend to lose the connection with my keyboard. I spent 3 hours repeatedly rebooting my computers, but I could never get the switch to work properly.

Nice product, but beware with Mac Pro desktop4
I bought this to use with a Mac Pro (desktop) and a laptop. The product is designed nicely, but appears to havean incompatibility with the Mac Pro - whenever I'd switch away from the Mac it would crash, and the error report upon booting suggested the crash was happening in an Nvidia driver. Apparently when you switch away the computer loses EDID information from the monitor, then crashes. I tried the competing Belkin model (F1DG102D) and, while about $30 more expensive, it works well (though it does use a power adapter, while the Iogear does not). One other quirk with the Iogear is that when booting the DVD drive would pop open. I'm using a Logitech wireless keyboard mouse combo, perhaps the problem is related, but I don't see this with the Belkin.

Works for my setup5
I purchased this item to switch my USB keyboard, mouse, speaker, and DVI LCD monitor connection between a laptop dock and my desk system. I looked at all of the DVI switches on Amazon and this switch was the best compromise between price, feedback, and features for my needs.

Some notes, especially WRT the comments about other switches:

- The special function keys (one-touch Word, Excel, etc) on my Microsoft keyboard continued to work through this switch

- This switch is supplied with a separate toggle switch (flat 1" diameter illuminated push button) which, when pressed, will toggle the switch. Green LED's on the button switch on/off to show which computer is selected.

- Switching may also be accomplished by double-pressing Scroll Lock on the keyboard. The hot key may also be changed to Ctrl by pressing/holding the pushbutton or by a keyboard hot-key sequence.

- There are several switching modes: switch everything, switch only the KVM functions, switch only the audio, or go into an AutoScan mode where it automatically toggles between the two computers at one of four user-selected intervals.

Works as expected4
Works great, but the cables are way too SHORT; as a result it takes a lot of squeezing to get all the components close enough to connect.

IF IT HAD LONGER CABLES, I WOULD NOT HESITATE TO RECOMMEND IT.

A Great Buy5
I bought this KVM switch from amazon.com three weeks ago and received it within two days via SuperSaver shipping. I use the switch with three computers running ubuntu linux 8.04, Windows XP, and Windows Vista and a wide screen monitor at 1680x1050. The switch works perfectly and does what it is advertised to do. I bought this model because I wanted a KVM switch that could work with both PS/2 keyboards and mice and USB keyboards and mice. This has the added advantage of working with audio, having both microphone and speaker connectors. In addition, unlike some KVM switchs, this one comes with a complete set of cables and it combines the monitor, keyboard, and mouse cables into a single cable for each computer, minimizing the number of cables on my desktop. And the monitor, keyboard, and mouse are hot pluggable, that is, you can unplug your keyboard or mouse or monitor and swap in a different one without shutting off the computers, as I did once, without worrying about it affecting the computers.

The hot key is programmable; the default is the Scroll Lock key but you can reprogram the hot key to any key. Press Scroll Lock twice and the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 to switch between four computers. Or you can use the four buttons on the front of the KVM switch. You can also continuously automatically cycle through all four computers and you can set the amount of time each computer is in focus while cycling. What if you are listening to music or talking to a friend on Skype off one computer and want to work on another computer? No problem, you can set the audio to focus on a single computer even when you are working on a different computer.

There are some drawbacks, but in my opinion, they are not very strong, and I'd still highly recommend this KVM switch. Here are the drawbacks so far. When you press the hot key the switch beeps, then when you press the number key to choose which computer to switch to the switch beeps again. The beep is a very low, quiet beep but it's a beep. I can't imagine why anyone would want beeps when switching computers unless maybe this KVM was made for blind people who might need a confirmation that the switch happened. Can anyone tell me why most high end KVM switches come with beeps that can't be turned off?

Secondly, I use a wireless optical mouse. The mouse and keyboard remain powered on at all times, even when all computers are turned off. I came in to my office after Labor Day weekend and found that my mouse and keyboard were still powered on. Not good for an item that runs on batteries so I have to unplug the KVM switch when I shut down the computers. I then discovered that I have to let the KVM switch "warm up" after I power it back on before I turn on any computers. Once, I powered it up and immediately turned on my computers and there was no video from any computer because the KVM switch wasn't "warmed up" yet.

Last, Trendnet advertises that the switch maintains a monitor signal at all times so you don't have to worry about the computers that are not in focus not recognizing a connected monitor. Unfortunately that signal is apparently for a generic monitor and I cannot start up all three computers simultaneously and expect them to come up with the correct resolution. The ubuntu and the Vista computers apparently have to sense the connected monitor as they are starting up or they will go into the wrong video resolution. The Vista machine additionally has to detect that there are speakers connected or it will disable the audio output. The XP machine is the only one that can consistantly start up and find the video resolution it was set to previously without being the computer in focus as it is starting up. The end result is I have to start up my computers one at a time; I start up my ubuntu computer, when the login screen appears I switch to the Vista computer, and when the login screen appears I start up the XP computer. Once all the computers are started there is no further problem. I did have one occurance of the ubuntu computer not being able to come back from energy saver mode and find the right resolution but that was a one-time occurance.

On the whole, I can strongly recommend the Trendnet TK-423. I'm happy with it and it does the job.

Works perfectly5
My connections are 1 PS2 mouse and keyboard controlling 3 computers, all 3 on PS2 mouse/keyboard. Switch works perfectly. Switching between desktops is easy, Scroll Lock twice then 1,2,3,4. If you want the switch not to beep when switching, simply press Scroll Lock twice then B (B for beep I suppose). It comes with all necessary cables for monitor, keyboard, mouse and audio connections. Audio switching is supported in addition to the standard keyboard/monitor switch.

Does Not Work1
The AC plug does not fit the KVM, and it will not power up without it, so I sent it back and the next one same problem . I went with the cabletogo tru link and very happy with this KVM .

The product works pretty well, but it is not quite the whiz described by David Pogue. Setup was easy. The software is in the product. I use it to display the laptop on the large desktop monitor, but the laptop does not display full screen on the monitor. Since I do my email on the laptop, I can also do it on the desktop, but there is a tiny image delay that makes typing email using the desktop monitor and keyboard a bit awkward. I can cut and paste from the laptop (remote) to the desktop (local), but not from desktop to the laptop. There is a USB port in the device that allows a printer connection, but that just provides another USB port for the desktop because it can't be used to print from the laptop. The connection between the computers stops from time to time, but can be reestablished easily.

The file sharing feature works easily in both directions although it uses a file manager that is a bit clunky.

Great for its intended purpose, hard to stretch much further3
This cable is essentially a way to link two computers in order to do file transfer. Its intent is to allow you to boot up old desktop pc's which you've long ago ditched the monitor and keyboard, and retrieve the files using your laptop's keyboard, monitor and mouse. For that purpose, it works well.

As a KVM alternative, it's not exactly stellar. As you may read on reviews at other sites, there is a bit of lag. Over USB2, you can't view video or things with fast refresh rate, but you can essentially use the other computer as you would expect. One disappointing thing was, that while the packaging says that it "automatically adjusts for resolution," I didn't care for this feature. I would have expected, that as possible on other VNC software solutions, when you resize the window, the remote desktop resizes so you can see the entire desktop at one time. With the VNC software that comes built into this KVM switch, when the remote desktop is larger than your laptop screen realestate, the software gives you scroll bars for vertical and horizontal. This makes navigating another computer a little cumbersome and can make certain applications nearly unusable.

Lastly, over a USB1 connection, this product isn't even worth trying. The lag was over a minute. If you opened an application, it would be a minute before you'd get the feedback that it had started. I had a monitor running on the remote desktop so I was able to track the lag, which was significant. If typing on one screen, it would take a minute for the text to appear. DO NOT RECOMMEND it for USB1 connection.

IOGear KVM does what it says4
Ok! It works like it is supposed to! I am a 'computer guy' and use it almost daily for one-shots when changing out computers and the user has not managed to save all their data to the server (like Favorites, Desktop, etc). Just not having to have a second monitor or be swapping the monitor cable back and forth is worth the price of admission.
