Switchview Pc 4 Port PS/2 KVM Switch

The Avocent SwitchView PC 2-port KVM switch lets you control two attached computers from a single keyboard, monitor and mouse.Front-panel LEDs indicate which computer you are controlling.

Works Great I've tried many KVM's, linksys and iogear, and none worked with my Logitech Trackman Mouse. After hours of researching KVM switches I finally decided to try one of Avocent's SwitchView KVMs. This KVM from Avocent works perfectly, compatible with my Trackman mouse, and the picture quality is perfect. I'm using ps/2 to usb adapters to connect to my laptops, and probably should have spent a few more bucks to get one of Avocents USB KVM's, but after wasting money on other brands I was trying to spend as little as possible. If I ever need to buy another KVM I will buy an Avocent first. If you use a Trackman mouse or a USB mouse I would recomend trying one of the USB SwitchView models, but if you get PS2 adapters this one should work fine.

IOGear 2-Port USB KVM Switch with Cables and Remote GCS22U (Black)
From IOGEAR

IOGear GCS22U 2-Port USB KVM Switch, 2-Port USB Cable KVM allows users to share a VGA monitor, a USB mouse, and a USB keyboard between two computers. Users can switch between computers using a manual switch located on a wired remote controller that can be placed on your desk for ease of reach. It offers an out-of-box solution with no additional cables needed. It supports multiple operating systems including Windows, Sun, and Mac. It is entirely plug-n-play and requires no software to run. It is also powered through the USB bus and thus does not require a power supply to run. It is the ideal KVM for those who want a competitively priced, entry level KVM that will allow them to multitask with two computers at their disposal.

Plug and Go (read more below), out of the way, easy to switch In a nutshell: Compact, less wires to get in the way, great remote switch to change computers, and works out of the box. Longer story Here were my needs: - I purchased this to be able to hook up my work laptop to my monitor and keyboard when I work from home. - I needed a USB KVM switch (versus older PS/2 connectors) - I prefer for the audio not to switch over so I can play music on my home computer while I work on the company laptop. - I hate wires, so the fewer the better. - Needed the switch to work with my wireless mouse and keyboard (you guessed that by now, didn't you?) This unit was perfect as the unit has the wires molded in and they are just long enough to reach both computers comfortably with no excess wiring to deal with. The remote button is nice and does not get in the way. My mouse and keyboard (Logitech) use one shared USB cable and the switch provides for two ports and plugs. This caused a little confusion and initially did not work when I plugged everything up. I figured this was more of my computer's USB recognizing the keyboard had moved ports problem rather than a switch problem. I was right. To solve this, I had previously plugged the monitor to the switch and the cable from the switch to the computer, this did not change. I did not hook the USB mouse/keyboard to the switch, but left it plugged into the computer where it was working originally. All was well so far. I then started the computer, made sure the mouse and keyboard were still working and moved the keyboard/mouse to the one of the switch's USB ports. I had tried both USB plugs in (this is important) the same USB port on my computer that the keyboard/mouse were plugged into. I found the right plug and everything was working. I could switch back and forth and/or restart the computer without issue. Other hints that might help. From a cold start (remember the switch is powered by your USB port) the switch will start on computer 1 (green lights show which is which, one dot or two). The cables were not labeled, so I guessed, and guessed wrong. I switched the plugs and all was well. Once I found the proper keyboard/mice USB cord coming out of that switch I was able to unplug the other one (remember, my Logitech uses one USB for both keyboard and mouse) to save a USB port on the back of my computer. I figure that I would not remember that later, so now was the best time to do this. Can you have enough USB ports directly on the computer? I expect this switch to work well for you if you have similar needs to what I outlined earlier. If your computers are far apart from each other, or you want to switch audio, or you need to switch between more than two computers, this is not the switch for you. You will need to invest in a more expensive solution. Great product, I would buy this again and recommend it for anyone with a home office. a decent kvm, but lacking a few features that a slight step up offers This KVM is fine, IOGear makes pretty good products. I am writing this just to provide a few comparison notes on the few but important differences between this and it's slightly more mature sibling the GCS632U. 1) This KVM does not offer any keyboard shortcut. There is a little wired "remote" connected to the KVM, and you must click the button when you want to change from one machine to the next. This does not seem ideal to me, because your hands must leave the keyboard and I would worry about the clicky switch failing over time. The GCS632U offers a typical "double scroll-lock tap" to change over, and this can be changed to another keypress as desired. I find this works much better than this unit's remote button setup. 2) This KVM has cables that connect to the monitor port and TWO USB ports on each target computer. The GCS632U one-ups this in a neat trick; it combines the keyboard and mouse inputs into ONE USB cable, so it only takes up ONE USB port on each target computer. Very nice, and fewer cables to plug in. This feature alone is actually enough for me to return the GCS22U for the upgraded GCS632U. 3) Last, but not least, the GCS632U adds 1/8" plugs for audio. I personally don't use this, but for those who want to connect a single pc speaker system (or other audio output) to the two target computers, this is a nice feature. Hope that's helpful. To me, an extra $10 is worth having an extra USB port free on my laptop and other computer! And I much prefer the keyboard shortcut vs the remote button! Decreased video quality How satisfied you are with this product is going to depend on the quality of the video cable you are currently using. I noticed a marked decrease in how "sharp" the picture was on my monitor (a relatively new flat panel) once I started using this. I believe the reason is that the video cables provided are substandard as compared to the "master" VGA cable I've been using. Since the cables which come with the product are permanently fixed, you don't have the option of swapping them for better cables as you would with some other products at the same price. On the plus side, the product works right out of the box and I like the switch, which allows me to hide the KVM and cables out of site and just run the thin cord for the switch to the front of the desk. I've returned this to Amazon and purchased the Trendnet KVM for $10 more.

Introducing the two-port MiniView Micro KVM switch from Iogear--a simple solution for those with more PCs than hands. Use one keyboard, one monitor, and one mouse to control two PC or Macintosh systems. This self-powered KVM switch features mouse and keyboard emulation to ensure smooth operation, as well as support for plug-and-play monitors and most wheel mice. I Can See Clearly Now ... This is an excellent KVM switch!I purchased this item because the new KVM switch I got a week before did not provide the performance I expected or required. The earlier KVM switch was manual and provided a terrible video signal -- full of shadows and ghosts. Granted, this was probably due to the cheap cables that came with the unit but the costs of 2 new sets of cable would have been more expensive than this new switch! Thus the IOGEAR KVM Switch. For the cost of new cables I got a new automatic switch with integrated and upgraded cables. The video signal and picture quality is excellent, the compact design fits neatly on my desk, and the molded combo cables mean less clutter for my cat to get tied up in -- what more could anyone want?If you're looking for a KVM Switch that'll help you lose those unwanted pounds, become more attractive, and make you the envy of all your friends and relatives -- this is it! Finally, a great, cheap KVM for ordinary people This product has been needed for a while. I've had two complete systems on my desk for almost a year, and it's been a nuisance. But every time I researched KVM switches, I got dismayed by pricing, apparent problems, set up complexity including having to go out and get your own cables (for more money), poor physical design and so on. But Finally IOGear listened to the market, which is probably considerable, and designed just the right product. It comes with its own integral cables; in fact, there's little more to it than cables; it sits behind the computers or on the floor, off the desk and out of the way; installation is as minimal as possible, just shut down the computers, unplug the existing devices and plug the switch's cables in in a totally obvious way; it works great with both systems; it has a (finally!) sensible control-key combination, namely two hits on scroll-lock, a key I haven't used in years, so it will never happen by accident; there's no physical switch, but with a good control-key combination, who needs one, and who wants another box on the desk when the whole idea is to save space.Oh, did I mention that it just works. Well, it does -- mouse, keyboard, and monitor all work perfectly on both systems. And considering the cost of cables, the price is incredible. This should sell tens, if not hundreds of thousands. It simply nails the market niche. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars. Now, when is IOGear coming out with their 3- and 4-port models? ;-) Iogear KVM 2 computer Mini-micro switch I just got a new computer for Christmas and needed a KVM switch to use my keyboard, monitor and mouse on both my old and new computers. I was looking at other KVM switches, but saw this one at Fry's and bought it for $.... It is a great product. Worked fine first time, every time. No s/w to install. Controlled only by a keyboard hot key. No moving parts to break or wear out. And when you consider that it has 2 sets of 6 ft. cables built into the switch it is much cheaper than the competitors switches (have you seen what they charge for 2 sets of 6 ft. KVM cables these days!). Takes up almost no space and can be positioned under the desk if you wish. Great simple design, reliable, and inexpensive, considering 2 sets of cables are built in. Highly recommend it.

Perfect for the home user I have used many KVMs in server rooms. These industrial-strength boxes are big and expensive because they're designed to allow you to control large number of servers. Another feature of server-oriented KVMs is that they give an audible "chirp" when you switch to a new machine. That's helpful in noisy server rooms when you are switching between servers that have desktops that look mostly alike. But when I wanted a KVM to switch between 2 PCs at home, I wanted something small, inexpensive, and quiet (I most definitely don't want a loud "chirp!" waking up my kids at night). This Linksys is just about perfect. Because it has cables molded in, it is very compact. It switches silently (no chirp), and the video signal is clear and free of jitter or noise even at high res (1280x1024) with high refresh rates. Another customer said that he had some compatibility problems, but I haven't had any. I use a Microsoft optical USB mouse with a PS2 converter (it's a little adapter plug that came with the mouse) and I have used the KVM with a normal Dell keyboard, and with my current ultra-ergonomic Kinesis Classic keyboard. I would have given this unit 5 stars, except that I think the cables would benefit from being just a bit longer. As it is, the unit works well, has excellent compatibility, and is an incredible value. Happy with my KVM switch I am a computer engineer and needed a good quality KVMswitch to connect two computers to one monitor. This smallswitch comes with built in cables and is well built.I connected both a windows box and unix workstation tothe same monitor with no problems. The average user shouldn'thave any problems either since this product is not operatingsystem dependent. This is a wonderful product that I wouldhighly recommend. An A/V - Media Tech Perfect! Well, I was worried about monitor distortion as others have mentioned. Got it anyway and one PC was perfect, the other PC (that had a temporary crappy old PCI video card) actually DID have distortion. NOT the fault of the KVM switch. For kicks, I installed a different video DRIVER for that card, and for some reason it FIXED the problem. Then I put an AGP card back into the 2nd system, and it also worked perfectly. Factors that affect Video Signal: VGA cable too long; Cable extensions, weak video CARD signal (possibly from unreliable POWER supply in the computer), Video cables too close to other cables (power cords and such). If you experience distortion, it would probably happen with ANY KVM switch you buy. After all, you ARE extending your video cable. Worked great with CORDLESS KEYBOARD AND MOUSE. WHAT WOULD MAKE IT BETTER: Heavier gauge shielded video cables, Ferrite bead at the end of each cable... Of course this would also make it and more expensive and bigger. This is a good value.

Works great, but scroll wheel on mouse won't work. If you like using the scroll wheel, forget it, I'm taking mine back for one that supports a wheel mouse. Does not work with Vista and Microsoft wireless keyboard The switch worked fine with my xp laptop but did not work at all with my Vista desktop with a Microsoft wireless keyboard. Heard different responses from Belkin support but finally appeared to be incompatible with Vista and the Wireless keyboard. The switch worked fine when I plugged in a wired keyboard. Was not willing to give up my Microsoft Natural Wireless keyboard for the sake of the switch. So, returned this one and bought a IOGEAR (GCS42UW6) switch which is compatible. Wish the product info mentioned incompatible hardware setups clearly. Could have saved me plenty of time and effort. Prospective buyers please make sure that your hardware setup is compatible with this device before making the purchase. I was told some Microsoft and Logitech wireless keyboards and mice are not compatible with this switch. Hope that helps. Belkin Flip Switch I installed the Belkin F1DF102P 2-Port Remote (PS2) switch on our two computers and it worked without any problems. East to install and preforms as advertised. We are very pleased.

Brand: Avocent Model: 10045 Platform: Windows Format: CD Original language: English Dimensions: 1.32 pounds

Excellent KVM I bought this to replace a different brand rated for up to 1600 x 1280, which caused a very obvious loss of video quality on my LCD monitor 1280 x 1024 @ 60 Hz, analog input. What a difference the Avocent made. I'm running 2 identical LCD monitors from a dual-head card, one connected directly to the computer. Side-by-side, I can't see any degradation at all on the switched monitor. This KVM has a single button. To move from computer B to A, you press it 3 times. I was used to a separate button for each computer, and thought I'd miss that. But switching via keyboard (CTR, CTR, A, Enter) is even easier than reaching for the individual buttons; no software required.Another unexpected advantage is the all-plastic case. Every once in a while, I'd feel a static discharge when I touched my metal KVM, and usually that would disable the mouse and keyboard until the KVM and all computers were rebooted. Doesn't happen with the Avocent. All the connectors on the switchbox are female, i.e, require male connectors on the cable. My video cables were female, so I also bought Avocent cable sets. They're as good as any I've used, despite their moderate price. This KVM is powered from the computers, but also has an input for a 6 vdc 700 mA wall wart, not supplied. The manual (CD only) doesn't say when you'd want to use direct power - maybe with older computers that don't power the keyboard when off.My one email to the company - pre-purchase inquiry about whether it was reasonable to expect no video loss on an LCD -- was answered accurately, same day. I've owned 4 desktop KVMs over the years, and used a number of high-end ones at work. Of those, this is the least expensive but the one I prefer for home or individual work area. I didn't do a lot of research, and can't tell you it's the best one currently available, or the best value. Just that it works well for me and is a whole lot more than I expected for the price. Attention: IBM Netfinity and Netvista users Have been using this KVM for about a week. It works well and I like it...However; If you are considering this purchase and use IBM Netfinity or Netvista computers you should go to Avocent's web site and look at their "Knowledge Base" for Switchview. Apparently the switchview doesn't handle the 2 and 6 pin on the mouse connector properly on these computeres and you need to buy the correct type of cable for a workaround (basically swap the keyboard and mouse cables). This bit me and luckily I purchased Avocent cables and was able to use their workaround. Other than that, this is a good product. Works very well with other computers.

Great device for the price.5
I just needed a basic switch to go between my two boxes I have at my house. One is a XP Professional, and the other is a Fedora 11. Both are shared now to my Dell monitor, keyboard and mouse. I didn't need anything fancy, and with the way my household is having to "tighten the belt", something cheap.

I'm very happy with this, sure it has a slight delay of a couple of seconds but it gets the job done. Which is why I gave it 5 stars. Plus the fact you don't need any power source for it as it gets it's power from the system that's active at the time.

Perfect5
The installtion is so simply. Plug the included cables into your 2 devices. Plug your monitor into the switch.

Thats it! It works perfectly, I switch back and forth between my PC and 360. There is no loss in quality, no ghosting, etc.

Not only that but I have my USB keyboard plugged into the switch, and whenever I switch from PC to 360 (by a push of a button) it also switches the keyboard over. So I can type messages to my friends without the hassle of changing cables. Honestly worth every penny!

Hooking up the Kinamax3
I hooked up an older computer that had PS2 mouse/keyboard and a newer one that uses USB mouse/keyboard. Basically, it works, but the PS2 computer doesn't recognize the USB mouse/keyboard at boot up until you confirm the keyboard is hooked up by pressing F1.

The VGA monitor is hooked up with a DVI to VGA adaptor on both computers, and then feeds into the Kinamax. Although the Kinamax supports higher resolutions, it defaults to 600x800 on the newer computer, a problem for me because I use Photoshop and Premiere that recommends higher resolutions. But if I boot the computer with monitor directly hooked to the computer, then physically unhook and plug the monitor into the Kinamax, it'll display the higher resolution. This isn't a problem with the PS2 computer. I can't figure out why this is.

In short, the Kinamax works. If I boot then hook up the monitor through the Kinamax, I can switch with ease between the two computers. The mouse/keyboard hook up doesn't have any real problems except for pressing F1 during booting on the PS2 computer.

KVM Cables4
This is a great product and installation was a simple. I only wish they can find a way to makw the cable smaller for less clutter.

Cable "Set" Misleading2
This cable 'set' is a single tri-plex (KB-PS2, Mouse-PS2, Video-VGA-DB15) molded assembly. One 'set' is required for each computer connected to the KVM Switchbox.

They appear to be good cables, but at $24 each, it would cost another $96 for a full set to go with the Linksys 4 port KVM (Linksys SVIEW04 ProConnnect 4-station CPU KVM Switch which would require 4 of these cables.

Returned the one 'set' I bought as a sample.

GREAT KVMP!!!5
I Have used kvm switches for about 10 years now and this by far is the most effecient switch I Have used.this switch is fully spectd for USB 2.0 I use a wireless keyboard and mouse-one is bluetooth, one is wifi...both are plugged into the KVM switch and work flawlessly....a great product at a good price for anyone needing to have this quality product take care of their KVM needs..... Bob Christison

Works with the ThinkPad5
I bought and returned two other KVMPs because they simply didn't work with the Lenovo ThinkPad or its docking station. This one does.

It also easily does everything else it advertises. I like playing music from one computer and working, or switching between another. Also, if your VOIP setup is on one computer, and you are tinkering on another, this setup can be handy.

I have had NO problems with this switch.

USB 2.0 speeds, DVI video, it has all the features I wanted.

Great KVM for high-end setups5
This KVM was designed for high-end CAD, CAM, Gaming etc. and it works flawlessly for me. I spent a long time researching different models and very few are really capable of supporting high-end devices. Most KVM devices don't support high resolutions, many don't spoof dvi ports which can cause problems on startup if the device is not focused on the computer as it is being booted. Some, although it seems improbable, only support USB 1.1.

With this setup I am running two computers connecting to a DELL LCD display at 1920 x 1200. The picture is perfect. One of the computers is 25 feet of DVI cable away which is irresponsible of me because that is generally considered too far away to be running at such a high resolution. I am also flagrantly disregarding the USB 2.0 spec by running a USB cable over 15 feet; still it all works perfectly. This in part is probably because I running quality NVIDIA graphics cards and motherboards and I must be getting good signals but still, it's all going through the KVM and it is all working.

Additional points:

1. This KVM supports 1920 x 1200 screen resolution with perfection.
2. It is easy to switch audio, 2-port USB hub, and KVM independently with very simple hotkeys or you can use the buttons on the device if you'd like.
3. USB ports on device support my Wacom tablet and USB 2.0 external hard drives.
4. All the custom buttons on my Logitech keyboard work just fine. Your mileage may vary
5. Great KVM for graphics professionals.
6. The device comes with 4 sets of integrated cables. The quality is excellent. The video cables are as beefy as it gets. The USB and audio cables are fairly thin but the cable integration is very elegant and well thought-out. There are even integrated caps for the audio cables.
7. Unlike many KVMs, this thing looks cool and all cables are in the back of the unit except for one of the USB ports and a bonus mic and headphones ports on the front. Very clean design.

Good luck.

Sleek and unobtrusive5
I use several of these on my server racks and I am quite pleased with the simplicity and quality of the keyboard/monitor combo. The keyboard is laptop-style, but the buttons are still large enough that big fingers can still use it without being cramped and clumsy. The whole unit folds up and slides into 1U of space. This item works very well with HP's line of KVM switches (for example the Ip Console 2X1X16 USB Vm), which can attach to the same mounting rail and share the same 1U of rack space.

2 To 1 VGA Switchbox, DB15

You get what you pay for!!1
First I would like too say that I couldn't have expected too much being that I bought the cheapest VGA switch that I could find. . .although I had hoped and my thought process was that they most likely all do the same thing.

WRONG. . .

I had purchased the unit as a means to hook up both my computer and my XBOX360 to my monitor. When I received the unit I was first dissapointed in its craftmanship; being that it looked like it was manufactured in the 80's. But that was okay. . .as long as the item did what it stated.

WHICH IT DID NOT.

Yes it can switch between the two devices. . .but with MAJOR reduction of quality from BOTH. My once high def 360 now looks better on a TV from the early 90's and the picture from my computer is horrible. I am still using it until I get one without the quality reduction but am sorely dissapointed in this product and its quality. More than a 50% loss.

Just remember. . .YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!

Works perfectly for me5
I am using this A/B switch box to allow one laptop to toggle between two different external monitors (at different locations in my office). The unit works exactly as desired with no discernable degradation in video quality.

2 to 1 VGA Switchbox DB15 (Small object,big results) 4
I'm reluctant to call it (Gadget)from my point of view et is an essential. When I was in the need for another monitor I faund myself with two big problems. One, no room for second monitor and no money for it neither.
So, asking here and there I was suggested to buy 2 to 1 VGA Wichtbox,DB15.
And it worked for me just fine.Low price and small enough to fit in any place.
The two problems were solved with one small object.Nothing fancy, lights going off and on or annoying sounds.Just pure performance.

Horrible!1
Let me start by saying I very rarely post negative reviews. But my experience with the wireless flip usb kvm was so bad, I just wanted to prevent someone from making the mistake I did. I decided to get a USB kvm when my old ps/2 ergnomic keyboard died(first time I've actually managed to kill a keyboard) and I had a very hard time finding another ps/2 ergo keyboard locally. I couldn't just use an adapter because my mouse already uses one, and there wasn't room for two adapters side by side on my old belkin omni kvm. So I decided to bite the bullet and get a usb kvm.

I researched online and went to a couple of bricks and mortars to see what was available. I was pleasantly suprised by the prices, not having shopped for a kvm in 5 years. I read the reviews on the wired Flip, and went to Circuit City and saw this wireless version. I brought it home, and it didn't go more than a few minutes without flipping over without me pushing the button. Sometimes it flipped back and forth 5 or 6 times in a minute. This of course makes it utterly useless. I kept it on for an hour or two and even sat on hold on Belkin's support like for 15 minutes or so before giving up. I returned it and bought a different one (Belkin F1DL102U with no wireless option), and it is working fine. We're techies over here, and have run into wireless interaction issues before - I suspect that our wireless network or one of our neighbors' wireless networks was causing the interference. Anyway, don't buy this unless you have only the two computers, no wireless network, no cordless phones, and live at least 1/2 mile from anyone who uses any of these devices!

Wireless bad idea for a KVM1
This product has refused to work properly - it goes through bouts of switching on its own. I've tried different combinations of pc's, keyboards and mice - same issue.

Belkin ignored my email, but their telephone support was easy to reach. There solution - ship out another unit, dinging my credit card until they receive "defective" unit. Chances of getting my original $ back: none.

Bottom line is I think that the unit is too susceptible to RF interference to be used in any office with more than 2 pcs.

Unreliable wireless unit, keyboard input issues1
It's junk. Don't buy it.

I haven't had the problem others have seen, where it switches between computers at random times. I've seen other failure modes:

1) The remote switch sometimes stops working, and will not recover until I unplug the video/USB/audio cables from the triangular main body of the unit. At a guess, it's getting power from one or the other of the USB connections and I'm power-cycling it by disconnecting and reconnecting the cables. I've been able to get the same effect by disconnecting both of the USB cables from the computers, but that's even less convenient.

2) I periodically lose keyboard input for a second or so. I'll be typing, and half a dozen characters will be lost. Then it rights itself. I'm using a PS/2 keyboard with a USB adapter, and I haven't tested that without the KVM, so it's possible that the KVM isn't the problem there.

UPDATE: The PS/2-USB adapter was the problem. Without that, it's reliable, but very slow. I often have to press the button several times to get it to switch. If I used the second computer more than two or three times a week, I'd get another KVM. The thing is, USB was never designed to be used this way. If that's the essential problem, Belkin obviously can't fix it.

Good KVM with some significant limitations4
History

I have been using KVM switches for well over 10 years on my primary desktop as well as in a number of different situations (most of the others were support situations like computer labs, testing areas, server rooms, etc.). I am an advanced keyboardist (well over 70 WPM) and I am picky about my input devices (I use an Avant Stellar keyboard, a 2,000 DPI cordless laser mouse, and an iGesture pad as my primary input devices).

Functionality

I specifically purchased the 8-port IOGear MiniView Ultra+ (GCS1758). This KVM has some very impressive features. It supports a wide variety of video modes, as well as having a unique on-screen menu for changing computers and adjusting the settings of the KVM. It is very responsive to the change keystrokes and does a reasonable job of retaining the state of the keys used (num-lock and scroll-lock states).

Like most KVMs it uses a keystroke combination to change states (num-lock followed by the minus key "-"). Unlike most, when you do this you get a visual confirmation asking for the computer to switch to. This is a very cool feature and for the first time means that you really don't have to have the KVM within your sight-line to see what computer you are using. In the past I've done everything from using different primary cursors on the mouse to changing the background of each computer to identify it. This makes all that work unnecessary.

The KVM also has a menu which lists all of the computers that are currently active and you can arrow through the menu to select the computer you want. It lets you customize the name of each computer so that they are no longer just numbers. This is a wonderful feature. I don't have the KVM cascaded, but the documentation indicates that you can cascade multiple KVMs to double, triple, or more the number of computers you can switch from one keyboard. Hopefully the menus allow you to walk through the chain in a clear fashion.

I've seen many reviewers claiming that they are getting no ghosting through this KVM. Unfortunately that is not my experience. I am getting a slight ghosting from the switch to my NEC AccuSync (in 1280x1024 at 85Hz). I did with my previous KVM as well. I was hoping that the IOGear custom cabling would resolve this problem, but apparently not. No monitor adjustment has any noticeable effect on the ghosting, but it's not really that distracting (maybe I've just been living with it for too long). Frankly, I have never had a KVM switch that didn't cause a little ghosting (from the expensive Black Box and IOGear KVMs to the cheap Belkins, they all seem to ghost). I've just accepted it as the price I pay for the incredible convenience. One of these days I'll probably switch to a high-end LCD monitor, which tends to not have ghosting problems.

I haven't used the audio switching capability, so I can't comment on how well that works, but frankly the simplicity of electrically switching audio is such that I doubt there would be an issue there.

Problems and annoyances

One of the things that is most annoying about the menu system is that they are not really related to each other in implementation. If you use the num-lock-minus solution you can then type a number (say 3) and Enter to jump to that computer. If you use the scroll-lock twice method it brings up a menu where the number keys are completely ignored so you have to use the arrows to select a computer and press enter.

It would not have been difficult to support the numbers in one menu and the arrows in the other! It seems clear that these two interfaces were developed separately and no thought was given to creating a unified, consistent, user interface. So, it's like using two separate devices rather than feeling like you are using one piece of equipment.

One of the strangest annoyances is the way the unit will not allow the Alt or Control keys to be held down for extended periods of time. This is annoying in a number of situations, but none more often than when switching applications with Alt-Tab. For some reason the box let's up the "virtual" alt key after a few seconds so that instead of continuing on to the next application I suddenly pop into an application in the middle of the list. This "feature" is driving me quite insane.

Another minor annoyance is the power light on the front of the unit. It's amazingly bright. I had to cover it with a piece of electrical tape because it was nearly blinding me. Every computer has a light and none of them are a problem, but the main power light is at least 4 times as bright as these others. It's minor but strange that this one light is so much brighter than the rest.

I had thought that I had read that this device allowed switching other devices other than keyboards and mice, but unfortunately that was a different device because this one doesn't do any of that. I was hoping to be able to switch my iGesture finger pad and possibly a few other devices, but I'm just SOL. Considering the cost of this device, it's annoying that it doesn't have the features of their lower-end 2-port USB switch. Maybe they will add features to the unit in a future BIOS upgrade (but I'm not holding my breath since even if they do they probably won't remember to post the upgrade to the web site).

Unsupported Equipment

Unfortunately I now have a list of equipment that they don't support. First, according to their support they don't support "all" USB devices (even wired). They specifically don't support PS/2 keyboards or mice through translators. They don't support wireless keyboards or wireless mice. I've read from others that they don't support plugging the keyboard into the mouse port, and visa-versa (so any combination device is out). They don't support sharing any devices that otherwise appear to be mice to the computer, such as my iGesture pad isn't supported as a mouse.

Tech Support

Their tech support proved to be well below par. I initially e-mailed them about the problems mentioned above and instead of a helpful reply I received a form-letter telling me that I should call their toll number for tech support (there is no toll-free number in either the supplied documentation or the e-mail).

When I called their support number they informed me that they had no idea what the blinking code meant (I got the impression from every support agent I spoke to that the fact that lights could blink on the keyboard was a complete surprise to them). I got disconnected from their support (I am not quite ready to say that I was hung up on) multiple times.

Also, aside from not helping me with my problem, their support made it clear that they don't take notes while helping customers since every time I spoke to an agent I had to start from the beginning and give them all of my contact information. They did not give me any indication that this pulled up any history from my previous calls (all of which were made the same day).

I finally spoke to a "pre-sales" tech support agent who admitted that they had only tested their own PS/2 to USB cable and that, while it worked for them, they still would not officially support this method of connecting a keyboard to their device. I did end up finding a PS/2 to USB translator that worked, but I had to buy, and try, several (the one I ended up with was purchased from a local store and has no manufacturer's name for me to share).

Their web site was also less than useful in helping me. They don't mention on their site this lack of support for PS/2 to USB cables. They do have a downloadable BIOS on their web site, unfortunately this is also useless as the BIOS available on the web site is version 3.1 and the BIOS that came in the unit that I purchased is 3.5.341. Clearly they don't keep their web site up-to-date. This is another symptom of their lack of "support" for support, I suspect. 99% of their web site is dedicated to sales and the lackluster remainder is support. After a year of having the device the web site still has not been updated. To not update your web site in the last 4 versions of the bios with a year to do so means that the chance of my problems ever getting fixed are pretty much exactly zero.

Conclusion

After living with this device for almost a year I find that it is better at managing my computers than my previous KVM and I still like the menus, but the way that the shift keys (shift, control, and alt) won't stay down drives me batty. There are a few situations in the last year where I have actually unplugged the keyboard from the KVM and plugged it directly into one of my computers for a while to stop this from happening. It is so pervasive that when I use my laptop on the road I sometimes am surprised to find the alt key staying pressed when switching applications and the shift key staying pressed when multi-selecting items in a list.

I have a plain old mouse connected to the KVM and I use that mouse when using my "secondary" computers. For my primary computer and my laptop I move the USB wireless receiver for my 2,000 DPI mouse from one to the other.

If they would fix this one problem with the keyboard support I could live with the few other annoyances easily. I wouldn't mind them supporting wireless USB devices as well, but since they can't properly support the K in KVM, supporting wireless mice is obviously asking for the moon.

If you are buying this to switch between computers that you do not use on a daily basis (like in a support situation) and you can be picky about what devices you plug into it then this switch will probably be wonderful for you. If you have cordless devices or will be using the switch on a daily basis you may want to look elsewhere.

Also, if this is your first KVM and you think you may need support, there really isn't any so you should skip it.

Fantastic KVM - except for the V3
Having 5 devices (2 laptops, 2 desktop PCs and a Sun workstation), I really thought that this 8 port KVM would do the trick for me as the specs promised everything I need (though not the DVI that I'd love): enough ports, USB, audio/mic, and high res video. Since I use a 24" 1920 x 1200 monitor, the claimed 2048 x 1536 video support was especially of interest to me. Unfortunately, only 1 laptop and 1 of the PCs worked at that resolution, and the other 3 had ghosting bad enough that reading text was difficult. Even at 1600 x 1200 it was bad enough that I would not want to work on it. Other than that one significant problem, it's a wonderful KVM. The controls and build quality have a nice feel, not cheap. The feature set is all I can imagine wanting. The manual is well written. I ultimately had to return it due to the poor video quality, though.

IOGEAR KVM 8 puertos4
The IOGEAR MiniView 8 ports is an excellent product, met all my expectations, unfortunately, if we compare his version with Mini Synphony View 2-port, you're missing some things, like good rubber feet to prevent slipping at the product put it on your desktop, you need to have network and able to control printers and scanners through USB port. It also should include a 10/100/1000 network.
For the rest it works great, it's fast, looks great, is modern and really a bargain because you get a great team.

I switch between Windows Me & Windows 2000 computers.5
I was put off by some of the negative reviews for the keyboard shortcut for this product but chose it because it was less expensive than other KVM systems and it came with cables.

I couldn't be happier. Unlike another review states, the shortcut is documented in the instructions.

I looked for a KVM system because I didn't have enough room for 4 monitors. I run 2 computers and both have dual monitors (I use Matrox G450 video cards). I set up the KVM system to switch my center monitor between the 2000 and Me computer. My left monitor is the second Me monitor, the right the second 2000 monitor. I changed the desktop colors to make it clear which computer the center monitor was displaying.

I switch regularly by hitting the control key twice. Sometimes there is a delay of perhaps 1 second. The center screen goes black pops back with the other screen.

I loved the color-coded cables and did find the switch box to require two hands - one to hold the box steady and one to hit the switch. I used it to test on the first day and haven't used it since I memorized the double control key shortcut.

Confusing yourself with more than 1 Mouse or Keyboard?5
I know I used to use 2 mouses and Keyboards sharing 1 Monitor. If you are one of the serious "Joes" who has more than 1 Computer system, and has one of those old switch boxes for your keyboard, mouse, and monitor. Check this item out for grabs.

The "Linksys ProConnect 2-Port Compact KVM Switch Kit", a 2 port sharing interface with cables included. Yup, I sure did say "cables included". The truth to make things much simpler, it has support for your PS/2 Mouse and Keyboard, which means you don't lose power and control between switch overs.

And don't need to reach over to the switch to make it work, that's right! It has a hot key function, "LCtrl" x2. That's it! You can even put the box hidden or on top of 1 the Systems. Who cares! You'll never see it again once you've installed it. Pretty Cool huh!

This product package with "Ingenius" written all over it is a STEAL!

could of been so much more but still a good deal3
Overall I would say its a nice little switch that works very well. Its a good low budget KVM that will work for most home users who just happen to have 2 computers.

My gripes: The hotkey to switch between computers is not configurable. Because there is no software to set up this switch everything is hard wired. So hope you don't use the CTRL key for anything because if you hit it twice you switch computers. Personally this feature I could live without. The button on the switch is enough. I also noticed that since this key is essentially wired to the KVM to switch computers hitting it 1 time has a delay as the switch is looking for the double hit. This is really only a problem when playing games.

Switch does not correctly recognize my mouseman optical mouse. Windows only sees it as a 3 button wheel mouse. It is actually a 4 button mouse and when connected to the switch the 4th button now performs the same function as button 1. Again no software to configure so I am guessing I am stuck with this.

Tech support..well I haven't heard from them yet about this problem. My guess that there is no solution.

Good Points: Cheap, Easy to setup, comes with cables!, no external power supply, and works for most applications.

So I would say it gets 3/5, I would of given it 4/5 if tech support was more responsive. Compared to most other KVM switches you find out there its the best bang for your buck. Most others start at over $100. So if my gripes are not your problem and you don't have to email tech support..give it a 5.

UPDATE: I figured I should update this as I did finally get a resolution from tech support. Their only solution to any problem is basically remove power..try again. The KVM does not support any advanced mouse features such as more than 3 buttons. This is convirmed with tech support. Also I upgraded my keyboard and although most of the programable buttons work if I do the CTRL key switch too fast the KVM switch basically chokes and the keyboard goes dead. Solution..kill power and restart. Somewhat a pain ehh? And that was the answer with tech support. SO my review stands at 3 stars. If you have a cheap keyboard and mouse you should have no prolems. I have had it for almost a year and I do still use it so I just don't use the CTRL key to switch and got used to only using my 3 buttons.

This cable is MALE to MALE as said in the description. KVM cables and monitor cables should be using the same ends, MALE. As kvm cables are made to go specifically into your computer and into the switch, which usually have FEMALE ends.

Male ends are the connectors with the pins, Female ends are the connectors with the holes. This cable definitely comes with male ends. I almost tried to cancel my order because of these 2 reviews below me thinking I bought the wrong device, but when I got it, I was relieved they were wrong and the cables are working just fine.

It Is A KVM Cable, Not A Monitor Cable5
KVM Cables have 2 female ends because one end connects to the output of your video card and one end connects to the input of the KVM Switch, (both male). It is the proper setup for KVM switches, and most likely is what you're looking for if you have a KVM Switch.

Probably not the right cable for you1
This cable has TWO FEMALE ENDS. This is very unlikely to be what you need, unless some special circumstance applies to you. Normal monitors have a femal attachment. Normal computers have a male attachment. Normal monitor cables have a male side and a female side. KVM switches mimic this, having a female attachment as a monitor would. Unless you have some unusual setup, find a different cable.

Works great at a great price5
I really wasn't sure what to expect from this product. Based on it's price, I didn't expect much.
It was easy to setup. The construction seems durable. I now have it hooked up in a server room with eight servers and it works great. It hasn't skipped a beat.
The only negative would be the video quality dropped slightly when run through this box. Not a big deal since you will usually use this with servers.

Great Product5

Great product...

Works just like the ad...easy to setup and just works..

Nohacks

worthless with USB keys/mouse in our situation1
This thing is nearly useless with USB keyboard/mouse, at least in our situation.
The mouse won't work at all for 20-30 seconds (cursor is frozen), then might work for 3-10 seconds, then won't work again. Repeat. Mouse clicks are also bad, sometimes you have to click 15-20 times for it to "take".
Keyboard commands are also compromised.
Trendnet tech support had nothing to suggest other than the usual litany of "what cable are you using, have you tried a different keyboard and mouse" etc. Of course we are using Trendnet cables, have tried 4 different brands of keyb/mouse, and still no usable results.
I can't condemn the product wholesale, perhaps the PCs we are using have some magic, voodoo settings that preclude their use with a KVM switch (he said facetiously). Buyer beware.

They supply everything in this kit. The cables are professional grade and 4ft. long a piece. It come with one set of PS/2 to Keyboard/mouse connectors. Swithching can be done with keyboard strokes so you can hide the box. I was very glad I picked this one up! It is a must buy if you need to switch between 2 PCs.

Excellent!5
I've been using a KVM switch for over 2 years with a Linux and Windows box and I thought it was just the best way to go. I've gone thru two analog switches (the ones with the tangle of wires inside) and I bought a bunch of cables. I originally bought cheap monitor cables but the ghosting was terrible.

My old system worked fine at 1024x768 except occasionally it would lose the keyboard but the fix was to simply reinsert the keyboard plug.

I recently started working with a much larger monitor (running 1600x1024 under windows, 1600x1200 under Linux) and my old setup just couldn't handle the video bandwidth; the ghosting was terrible. So after checking out the reviews here I thought I'd give this one a try.

Its great. There might be a tiny bit of ghosting, but its too hard to say if its just the monitor itself. The only problem I've noticed, is that I can't get the mouse to work well under Linux/X windows. For some reason the resolution of the mouse just isn't great so the motion is a bit jerky. But its a small problem albeit annoying. The keyboard toggle between PCs works flawlessly and I've never lost the mouse or keyboard and the video is always centered (although thats probably a function of the monitor).

If you're using two PCs or a laptop and a PC this product is worth its weight in gold (its very light, as its sold state not the clunkly switch of old :)

lINUX AND THE lINKSYS KVM5
I get the Linksysy kvm, and the first time it, work great in a Compaq Proliat running Windows 2000 Server and in Compaq Presario running Linux Red hat 7.2.
but when I restart the linux bos for th first time, the mouse din't came back, it was really crazy, making stranges moves, but I resolve the problem edint this two files
File path /etc/X11/XF86Config

I changed the section entitled "Section "Pointer"" and the line below to:

Protocol "IMPS/2"

File path /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

I changed the section entitled "Section "InputDevice"" and the line below to:

Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"

This solved both the erratic mouse pointer problem and enabled scrolling.
